Challenge: Install epoxy grout underneath 3 large compressor stations. Each compressor station is approximately 40 ft by 15 ft and required 1.5 inches of grout. The biggest challenge was filling all voids under such a large structure both effectively and efficiently.

Solution: Chemsteel, Stevens Engineering, The Chas E. Phipps Co, BASF and Quikspray collaborated to determine the best application method of the preferred Masterflow 648 grout would be using a Quikspray Carrousel pump. This pump was equipped with a 25 ft hose and a 15 ft long 1.5 inch metal pipe that was attached to the end of the hose. This allowed the material to be pumped directly from the mortar mixer to the pump, then the metal pipe was inserted under the compressor to reach all areas.

Once the application method was determined and the forms were built, the installation could begin. The Quikspray pump and hose line were primed with the resin from the Masterflow 648 grout and the material was run through into an empty bucket to be used later. At this point grouting using a 3 bag aggregate mix could begin. Chemsteel had two people mixing the grout into the mortar mixer, one emptying the mixer into the pump, and one on the hose installing the product. One employee was as checking through port holes to ensure all voids were being full. After the grouting was completed, Sonoco round concrete forms were cut to 3’ and were used to support an electrical structure.

The relationship between contractors, the Chas E. Phipps Co., and its vendors ensured this job was installed properly and efficiently.
