Closed in the Summer of 2010, the new pedestrian tunnels were finally opened in July 2013 after facing numerous delays and construction hurdles. The tunnels connect the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood with Edgewater Park and Lake Erie.

When asked, "What were the biggest challenges you faced?", both project superintendent Greg Wiesniewski of Great Lakes Construction and VP Mike Biegacki of JADCO Construction Services gave the same anwer:

"The biggest challenges were saw cutting, and getting a monolithic look out of the old and new concrete. Everything had to be saw cut on one flat plain. Parts of the concrete on the exterior of the tunnel were from 1914, others only two years old. The finished product had to look monolithic and consistent."

JADCO Construction Services, who specialize in concrete repair and restoration was hired to transform the exterior of the tunnel. Mike explained:

"We had to transfer an artist drawing on to a flat piece of concrete and make it three dimensional. It was difficult to bond anything to the old concrete, it was pitted and crumbling. We had to make it all look the same, so we used a 1/4" coat of Euclid Tammscrete over everything to give it a consistent look."

The structure was then coated with Euclid Chemical Tammscoat to give it the 3-dimensional appearance and protect the concrete. For more information on this project, please visit the LAND Studio (Landscape Art Neighborhood Development) website.
