Product Description

SPEC MIX Portland Lime & Sand Mortar is a dry preblended mortar mix containing portland cement, hydrated lime and dried masonry sand formulated for superior bond, water retention and board life. Available in Types M, S and N, each meets ASTM C 270, ASTM C 1714 and CSA A179 requirements. SPEC MIX Portland Lime & Sand is available in standard or custom colors. In addition to custom mix designs that are available for specific applications or properties, the standard Portland Lime & Sand Mortar is designed to be compatible with the characteristics of the specified masonry unit. It is acceptable for all types of masonry construction.

Type S (PL-03) #19007: Type S mortar is a high-strength, cement-based product that offers a compressive strength of over 1,800 psi and high-tensile bond strength. It's suitable for many projects at or below grade, including masonry foundations, manholes, retaining walls, and sewers. Type S is also commonly used for at-grade applications such as brick patios and walkways.

Type M (PL-02) #19035: Type M mortar has the highest amount of Portland cement, making it suitable for heavy loads and below-grade applications, including foundations, retaining walls, and driveways. Type M has poor adhesion and sealing properties, which makes it unsuitable for exposed applications. However, Type M mortar is preferred for use with natural stone because it offers similar strength to that of stone.

Type N (PL-04) #19008: Type N mortar mix is usually used on exterior and above-grade walls (including stone veneer) that are exposed to severe weather and high heat. It is composed of 1 part Portland cement, 1 part lime, and 6 parts sand. It is considered to be a general-purpose mix, useful for above-grade, exterior, and interior load-bearing installations. It is also the preferred mortar mix for soft stone masonry (such as limestone). Type N typically achieves 28-day strength in the range of 750 pounds per square inch (psi).
